ある日の暮方の事である。一人の下人が、羅生門の下で雨やみを待っていた。

It was toward evening one day. A servant was waiting beneath Rashomon Gate for the rain to stop.

雨は、羅生門をつつんで、遠くから、ざあっと云う音をあつめて来る。夕闇は次第に空を低くして、見上げると、門の屋根が、斜につき出した甍の先に、重たくうす暗い雲を支えている。

Rain enveloped Rashomon Gate, gathering from afar a rushing sound. The evening gloom gradually lowered the sky, and when one looked up, the gate’s roof supported heavy, dim clouds on the tips of its roof ridge, which jutted out obliquely.

下人は、大きな嚔をして、それから、大儀そうに立上った。夕冷えのする京都は、もう火桶が欲しいほどの寒さである。風は門の柱と柱との間を、夕闇と共に遠慮なく、吹きぬける。丹塗の柱にとまっていた蟋蟀も、もうどこかへ行ってしまった。

The servant gave a great sneeze and then rose wearily. Kyoto, chilled by the evening cold, was already cold enough to make one long for a brazier. The wind blew without restraint between the gate’s pillars along with the evening gloom. Even the cricket that had been perched on a vermilion-lacquered pillar had already gone somewhere.

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.

凡是有钱的单身汉，总想娶位太太，这已经成了一条举世公认的真理。

However little known the feelings or views of such a man may be on his first entering a neighbourhood, this truth is so well fixed in the minds of the surrounding families, that he is considered as the rightful property of some one or other of their daughters.
